The Best Syrup Ever!
Made with Organic Herbs and Blackstrap Molasses
It’s my pleasure to introduce a new product, one I've been using on and off for two years but hesitated to market because of fears of its leaking during shipping. This product is called Iron-Building Tonic.
Here’s my story in short. I needed to get my hemoglobin levels up from 7 to the acceptable level of 11. My midwife said I had 6 weeks to do so or I would have to take iron pills. Besides for my regular hesitation to ingest artificial supplements and my natural tendency to… well, appreciate natural foods and herbs in healing, I also was not in the mood to contend with the well-known side effect of iron pills, constipation. Why should I have to go through that? So I promised my midwife I would take herbal iron remedies.
So in addition to eating red meat, chicken liver, sardines, eggs, beets, and Ezekiel bread, I took my herbal iron syrup daily. My midwife checked me in the middle of the six weeks, and saw that my hemoglobin levels were going up. Satisfied with the outcome, my midwife encouraged me to continue.
Besides for healing the anemia, which I was pleased with, this syrup cured something else. For almost a year I had a mysterious cold. Not really a cold, more like allergies, which I’d never had before. I couldn’t figure out what it was, but it kept me up at night because I was so stuffed up and then of course I was tired during the day. We cleaned the AC filters, we aired out the house, I spent outdoor time in the sun, I ate healthy, I ate sauerkraut, I took elderberry syrup. I even got a new organic mattress because I thought maybe it was the fault of my old mattress (then how disappointing when the long-awaited mattress arrived, and it felt so delicious, and that first night I slept on it… my breathing was still stuffed, and again I couldn’t sleep!)
Well, after the syrup, my cold seemed to disappear. I was pleasantly happy but didn’t think too deeply into it. When I stopped taking it, the cold came back. I wasn’t 100% putting two and two together. But when a friend asked me to make the iron syrup for her and then she changed her mind, I had a bottle for myself, so I took it. And then it became clear, as my cold cleared, that this syrup helped! Baruch Hashem!
So my theory is, since yellow dock root and dandelion are alteratives, they cleanse and rejuvenate the liver, and nettles are a blood purifier as well, so it was my liver improving, which in turn improved my allergies. Interestingly, the older herbal books include the beneficial effect of yellow dock root of alleviating uncomfortable tickling in the back of the throat! Voila! That was definitely one of my symptoms!
Anyway, in short, this is very healthy if you need your red blood cells increased, if your digestion needs improvement, as well as worth it to try if you have hay fever or allergies. Or… a tickling in the back of your throat.
Here is a summary of the benefits of each ingredient in this tonic:
Yellow dock is indicated for constipation, for skin eruptions, to purify the liver and blood, to restrain cancer, and to help assimilate iron and improve anemic and weakened states. It is known to help with a kind of cough that tickles the back of the throat.
Nettles are super nutritious, with abundant vitamins and minerals. They benefit anemic, undernourished people. They are also known to clear coughs, increase mother’s milk, arrest internal bleeding, help hayfever and asthma, and tonify the digestive system and urinary tract.
Dandelion benefits the liver, which is our goal here with iron absorption which takes place in the liver. It's also very medicinal and used for arthritis, high blood pressure, abnormal blood sugar levels, female problems, skin diseases, and cancer.
Kombu: this seaweed improves iron deficiency and works on correcting anemic symptoms. It also contains a high level of the super-important mineral, iodine. It improves digestion, helps prevent cancer, and keeps cholesterol in check.
Black Pepper is a catalyst. It supports the absorption of other herbs, stimulates brain function and circulation in the digestive tract and is good for vertigo and arthritis.
Ginger is great for colds, digestion, nausea, and is a stimulant that can help activate the other herbs in the formula.
Cinnamon is another stimulating herb that adds flavor to the recipe, helps with blood sugar levels for diabetics, can arrest bleeding, and correct nausea and vomiting.
Blackstrap Molasses contains very high levels of iron (but plain molasses does not, so check the label). It contains 20% of the daily recommended allowance for iron in just one tablespoon. It also has magnesium and calcium and an abundance of other vitamins and minerals. Because it is sweet, when mixed with milk or a milk-substitute hot drink, it proves to be very pleasant-tasting. It improves sleep, is good for bones, anemia (obviously), menstrual problems, increases stamina, benefits the skin, the brain, hair, and blood sugar, and is good against arthritis.
All these lovely ingredients are decocted/infused, boiled down, sweetened with the molasses and preserved slightly with the alcohol. So there you have it, the royal herbal iron-building tonic.
If you'd like to order the syrup, bear in mind that I custom make this when ordered.
Enjoy! To your health, l'chaim!
