Why Are We Here?

by Nechama Dina Smith

One time I called my favorite on-line herbal store, Mountain Rose Herbs, to make an order. I was discussing the pros and cons of an item and was indecisive about what to order. The representative was exceedingly patient.

“I’m sorry for taking so much of your time,” I blurted out. “I must be your worst customer!”

Her reply astounded me. “Not at all! You’re the best!” she enthused. “You would never believe the rudeness of some people who call.”

“What?” I asked. “You mean earthy, alternative, nature-loving people call in and are nasty???”

“Yes!” she insisted. “Totally natural and acting horrible.”

The rest of the day I went around subdued.

You see, being into natural health takes up a lot of my time. I spend far more hours in my kitchen making my food from scratch than most people I know. I go to great lengths to find natural cures that don’t have side effects. I’m on chats that encourage choice and careful research about vaccines. I guess you can say… I believe in all this stuff. I’m not a controlling parent (I wish I were, at least a little more so), but certain things I don’t allow—soda, antibiotics (except for life-and-death situations, G-d forbid!), anti-perspirant deodorant, and laffy taffies. And amusement parks are not for us, despite the begging we have to endure. It’s nature walks! And farms! And petting zoos! Gardens! Hikes! Lakes!

So it was a shock for me to hear that there are people with similar interests to mine who are not good people. Individuals who spend hours trying to buy the perfect supplies for their perfect health so they could live super long lives without illness… who forget why they are living. Who find it okay to trample others, who can be hateful and mean. Who believe they are the center of the universe instead of their Creator.

In other words, being into health has nothing to do with being a good person!!!

I had to rethink everything. I do believe going as natural and organic is the best for one’s physical life. From my experience it’s the most effective way to prevent major illness and the safest way to treat smaller problems. And I feel one can accomplish much more when feeling good and not weighted down with digestion issues or headaches or low blood sugar faintness!I know there are others who don’t think that’s such a big deal. And that’s okay.

But one thing we must all agree on: The world is built on kindness, as it says in Psalms 89:3 , “This world will be built by love.”. If you’re going to be mean to others, or...if I am cruel to someone else… we are sadly, so sadly, missing the whole point of being in this world.

Let’s try to influence each other in positive ways. And let’s do so in a kind way.

I’d love to hear your opinion. In order to comment, I think you have to do a whole log-in thing—but if you have the time, that would be terrific!

About the deodorant that I mentioned I push on my kids, I actually don't push it, I don't mind what they use as long as it's natural. But I happen to love the one I make, so you can try it too!

Also the natural antibiotic I take with no side effects, you’re welcome to take a look at as well!

As for the soda and laffy taffies, I don’t have natural ones to offer you. But I can suggest kombucha instead of soda and delicious maple sugar candies instead of taffies!

Have a wonderful day, week, and Shabbat!
